Castelnuovo Berardenga - Toscana

Pacina, a hamlet just outside of Castelnuovo Berardenga, is named after the Etruscan god Pachna - the god that became Bacchus the Roman god of wine and revelry. Fittingly Giovanna and Stefano make wine here and work an estate that has existed since the first millennium AD. The estate was previously a convent that was renowned for its olive oil, wine, cereals and fruits and vegetables.

Giovanna and Stefano continue this tradition to this day, with help from their children Maria and Carlo. They work their vines organically encouraging a vibrant ecosystem and make wine in a very traditional way with long macerations and minimal intervention. The vines are planted on fossil-rich limestone - the area was a sea many years ago. This soil contributes to the mineral backbone and vibrant acidity of their wines.
