Val di Susa - Piemonte
Mario Siragusa's wine became an obsession after he gave us a little reused beer bottle sealed with half a cork containing a wine he made by crushing the grapes with his hands whilst they were attached to the vine; like milking a cow he told us.
We had met Mario whilst he was on holiday curing his thirst for French natural wine. He left us some bottles he had made in his garage in the Val di Susa, in the Italian Alps, and we were hooked immediately.
Since 2013 Mario has restored several abandoned vineyards and he now has a collection of old local varieties which he assembles to create tiny quantities of wine in demijohns. These are available in normal size bottles with whole corks.
