Andrea Calek
Alba-La-Romaine - Ardèche
Andrea has many mythologies surrounding him as to how he ended up in the Ardèche making wine. My favourite is that he ran away from his native Czech to avoid the draft. He spent some time working with other winemakers in the south (Domaine Hauvette among others) and fell in with a new wave of winemakers working naturally in Ardèche (Oustric and Azzoni). He decided to settle there. Back-stories aside Andrea’s wines have huge depth and complexity and suggest that he learnt a lot on his way to Alba-la-Romaine.
Producer: Andrea Calek
Region: Ardeche, France
Grapes: Syrah
Style: Red
Alc.: 13.5%
Size: 75cl bottle
Notes: Having spent a year in barrel this has a breadth and depth to it that is really enjoyable. It has a purity to the Syrah fruit that reminds us more of wines from the Northern Rhone which in actuality isn’t that far away.
