David Humbert – La Vigne Sauvage

Lac Léman - Haute Savoie

High in the French Alps David Humbert farms 1.5 hectares of mostly Chasselas and a little Gamay on the banks of Lac Léman. Here he makes wines of dazzling purity and striking saline minerality.

David created the domaine in 2018 and the vineyards are split into two small parcels one in the appelation Marignan, the other in Marin, both on limestone and clay soils. He farms Biodynamically and doesn’t use a tractor in an effort to preserve the structure of his vineyard’s soil. It’s just the beginning of the life of this domaine and it is a very exciting start.

Notes: David macerates the fruit for 1 month, and racks the wine a couple of months before bottling. Fruit for this cuvée comes from David’s Marin plot that he makes L’insouciance (his direct-pressed chasselas) from. Unripe apricot and stone fruit, with secondary notes of noyaux/almonds – this will be lovely with a tartiflette.

Notes: The new vintage of David’s gamay from a parcel in Marin, which is in conversion to biodynamics. This is a brilliant showcase of the lift and minerality that alpine gamay has – the fruit is destemmed, and aged in barrels after fermentation. Mineral, lean, herbal, with bright berry-like fruit, and an undertone of spice on the finish.

Notes: From David’s younger vines in Marin, which has fully been converted to biodynamics. The fruit undergoes a short maceration before pressing, and the wine is racked a couple of months before it is bottled. This is a richer wine in comparison to previous vintages, almost reminiscent of Jura chardonnays; gentle lemony acidity leading to a rich, almost nutty, finish.
