Winter 2024*:

FIZZ

Cà de Noci, Querciole 2022 (Emilia-Romagna – Spergola)
It has been a while since we included one of the wines from Giovanni and Alberto Masini in our selections, but as they are so well suited to this time of year we thought their Querciole would be a perfect fit. Here the Spergola, a variety indigenous to Reggio-Emilia, is lightly macerated on its skins before fermentation which gives the resulting wine a delicious deep russet apple flavour, with spritely acidity and delicate bubbles.

WHITE & ORANGE

Marie & Vincent Tricot, Désiré 2023 (Auvergne – Aligoté)
Based in the town of Orcet just south east of Clermont-Ferrand, Marie and Vincent farm just over five hectares, planted mainly with Gamay and Pinot Noir. They have been planting a mixture of new vines over the past few years, and this is the first time this cuvée is 100% Aligoté, from vines aged between 7 and 9 years. Clean, crisp, and fresh, this shows off some typical Aligoté notes coupled with the salt and smoke we’ve come to expect from the Auvergne.

Celler Tomàs Torres, Criant Malves 2023 (Valencia – Malvasia)
Though his main occupation was working for the forest service in Carricola, Vicent and his family have long had a small-holding and produced some wine. Since the 90s Vicent began to expand, ultimately farming 5 hectares of vines spread across 14 different plots of largely indigenous varieties. For someone who refers to his winemaking methods as “simple”, there is amazing diversity in his wines, and they are a joy to drink. A slightly shorter maceration here allows the floral aromatics of the Malvasia to shine.

RED

Barranco Oscuro, Varetùo 2021 (Alpujarras – Tempranillo)
We return to the wines of the Valenzuela family again and again for our seasonal boxes, not just because they make many different wines that are well loved, but also because there is something about them that seems to embody the seasons themselves. Their Tempranillo is a mix of gently macerated grapes with some of the direct press juice, producing a wine that is deeply comforting in is richness and depth, but still with a litheness and lift that keeps you coming back for more.

Calvez Bobinet, Ruben 2019 (Loire – Cabernet Franc)
Farming a few hectares in Saumur Champigny, Seb Bobinet and Emeline Calvez are now probably best known for their thirst quenching, light and fun wines, but when we first fell in love with their wines it was with their deep, grown-up and sometimes wild Cabernet francs. And it’s at this time of year that these wines truly shine, they are a pitch perfect match for the flavours of the autumn table. Dark and brambly with a spiced edge and lovely peppery notes.

Ostal Levant, Regain 2020 (Cahors – Côt)
We spent a memorable weekend with Louis and Charlotte Pérot at their home last year. Their house, cellar and vineyards sit above Puy l’Eveque on a wide bend of the meandering Lôt river. This is the home of Côt (Malbec) and on this iron oxide rich clay soil the Pérots make some fantastic  expressions of this much-loved grape. Particularly with this plot of older vines you see the delicate saline qualities that Côt can show; a far cry from the ripeness of wines from Mendoza. To balance out this light edge, Regain still has a firm tannic structure and richness from longer barrel ageing.
