Winter 2025*:
FIZZ
Malauva, Rebelle Mariage 2024 (Umbria – Procanico, Drupeggio, Verdello)
Elisa Cortese and Giovanni Adua bought a small farm in the hills above Castel Giorgio in 2017 at the crossroads of Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria, on volcanic soils not far from Lago di Bolsena. They began to restore 6 hectares of vineyards and surrounding forest as well as the farm buildings. Their sparkling blend, from young vines they planted, has such a burst of warm fruit, baked Bramley apples, with bite of aromatic lemon at the end.
WHITE & ORANGE
Calvez Bobinet, Poil de Lièvre 2024 (Loire – Chenin Blanc)
Farming a few hectares around Saumur, Seb Bobinet and Emeline Calvez’s winemaking has incredible breadth: from thirst quenching, light and fun cuvées, to deep, grown-up and sometimes wild Cabernet Francs and rich, soulful Chenin Blanc. In recent vintages their Poil de Lièvre has morphed from a light and zesty Chenin to something with broader shoulders. This vintage is beautifully mineral and crisp upon first opening, and opens up into a delicate perfumed more unctuous wine with some time.
Lammidia, Bianco 2022 (Abruzzo – Trebbiano)
Davide and Marco, two young Abruzzese, have been friends since they were three years old. After university they took different career paths and eventually reunited with a common passion for wine. The wines have changed and developed a lot over the years, and this Trebbiano is a prime example: a gentle maceration on the skins and then longer ageing in the bottle has produced a wine that is at once deep and opulent, but with a fresh and salty twang.
RED
Domaine des Trouillères, Montagne de Stras 2023 (Auvergne – Pinot Noir, Gamay d’Auvergne)
Based in Martres-de-Veyre, Mikaël and Camille farm six hectares on the various puys that surround the commune. This is a blend of Gamay d’Auvergne and Pinot Noir from the volcanic slopes of puy de Marmant, Corent, and more, growing at between 380–450m. The fruit is macerated in whole bunches then aged in a mix of barrels and stoneware jars. It is mineral and precise, with some plump red fruit and enchanting spice.
Barranco Oscuro, Varetùo 2021 (Alpujarras – Tempranillo)
We return to the wines of the Valenzuela family again and again for our seasonal boxes; we love them and the variety of styles that they make from their many small plots means that, more often than not, they make a perfect wine for the moment. Their Tempranillo from younger vines is a mix of gently macerated grapes with some of the direct press juice, producing a wine that is deeply comforting in is richness and depth.
Ostal Levant, Fioretti 2022 (Cahors – Côt)
Perched above the winding river Lot, Charlotte & Louis Pérot farm a few hectares of mainly Côt (Malbec) just outside the medieval village of Puy-L’Éveque. This has plenty of the familiar Malbec inkiness and depth, and speaks of the warmth of the South, but has a lovely herbal bite and some freshness to keep you coming back for more.
