Spring 2025*:

FIZZ

Davide Spillare, L1 2022 (Veneto – Durella, Garganega)
Davide farms about five hectares of mainly Garganega in the hills above the town of Gambellara. His father and grandfather had previously sold the grapes to the local co-op, and in 2006 Davide took over and began bottling himself. This is from younger vines, a delicious traditional method fizz with some opulence and richness, tempered by a zip of acidity.

WHITE & ORANGE

Patrick Bouju & Justine Loiseau, CC 2022 (Auvergne – Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc)
Justine and Patrick have a small amount of their own vines in Auvergne but over the last few years have bought fruit from friends further afield in Alsace, the Languedoc and, in the case of this wine, a combination of the Loire and new vines they’ve begun working in Auvergne. This has lightning-fresh acidity and some lovely texture. A breath of Spring in a glass.

Mas Coutelou, Clairette 2023 (Languedoc – Clairette)
Jean François Coutelou (Jeff for short) runs his family’s domaine in Puimisson a few kilometres from Béziers on France’s mediterrenean coast. The farm has been certified organic since 1987 and disturbed by the monoculture of modern farming Jeff has planted thousands of trees amongst his vineyards transforming the 20 hectares of the farm to 13 planted with vines and the rest with olives, figs, almonds, and fruit trees. Clairette is one of the varieties that is suited to the heat and drought of recent years. Here it is vinified with a touch of maceration on the skins, which gives it a bit of bite and body; notes of bitter almond and warm fruit.

RED

Catherine Bernard & Nicolas Allain, Le Claret 2022 (Languedoc – Carignan)
We have been working with Catherine since we first started importing wine, nearly 15 years ago. Her wines go from strength to strength, and for us always manage to epitomise the Languedoc. Much like Jeff Coutelou above, she has struggled with the changing climate, and so over the years she has adapted her winemaking style, which is best illustrated here with her claret Carignan. Two thirds of the grapes are pressed without any maceration, preserving some freshness and lift. The resulting wine still shows the blistering heat of the Languedoc summer, but there’s a delicacy and lightness of touch that make this enormously quaffable.

Domaine des Trouillères, Bouche à z’Oreille 2022 (Auvergne – Pinot Noir)
Based in Martres-de-Veyre, Mikaël and Camille farm a few hectares on the various puys that surround the commune. We recently received some of their 2022s and 2023s and we are all thrilled to have them back on the shelves. This is from their Larrivas plot on the slopes of the puy du Corent. Destemmed fruit is fermented in concrete and aged in stoneware amphora for 12 months. Vibrant fruit, with layers of salinity – this opens up beautifully.

Celler La Gutina, Demontre 2021 (Catalunya – Garnatxa)
Barbara and Joan Carles Torres make wine on the windswept slopes of the Aspres des Alberes, just over the border from France. They grow Garnatxa (Grenache noir) predominantly, which seems to really enjoy the granite soil by expressing itself with tension in the glass, but also grow olives and small plots of other grape varieties. This is such a pure and expressive wine: equal parts fruit and spice, and a wonderful wine to drink in the much anticipated spring sunshine.
