Les Bariolés, Chalenta 2022
Producer: Les Bariolés – Claire Freist & Edoardo Veltroni
Region: Auvergne, France
Grapes: Chardonnay
Style: White
Alc: 12.5%
Size: 75cl bottle
Notes: From an east-facing plot planted in 2000 at about 500m above sea-level. They press the grapes slowly in an old basket press, and then age it on the lees in old barrels for 12 months. Rather different from their Les Suquets cuvée, this has more delicate fruit and salinity. The ageing in old wood has softened the edges here, and the cooler plot helps keep things light, with a touch of freshness.

Chalus - Auvergne
Claire Freist and Edoardo Veltroni make wine in the pretty village of Chalus that overlooks the valley of Boudes in the southern Auvergne. Their vineyards are on the south eastern slope and are predominantly planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay. Since taking over the vines they have planted some Syrah too. Having studied winemaking (Eduardo in Pisa, and Claire in Beaune), they met while working in vineyards in Burgundy. In love, young and ambitious, they moved to the Auvergne to raise a family and make wine. Their wines reflect the apprenticeship they had in Burgundy and show off the classic nuances of the varieties they work with. The wines are delicious in their youth, but also show great promise for ageing.
